Machel will miss Bunji and Fay Ann
January 26, 2012
Amid much talk of internal wrangling among Soca artistes for one reason or another, reigning Power Soca Monarch and Road March champion, Machel Montano says he’d like to see more harmony among the local entertainers.
In an interview with ETCETERABUZZ.COM, Montano said he felt the season was too short for any kind of discord. “It will always have tension because everyone is releasing music at the same time in such a small industry. We are all trying to strive but I think we need more love.”
Adding that Trinidad and Tobago is a small country, Machel highlighted that with so many artistes fighting to ‘make it,’ there would always be some level of competition during the season. Celebrating 30 years as a Soca artiste this year, the Siparia native told us that he has no reason to stop or retire anytime soon. He explained that there are still many goals that he needs to accomplish. “If I was to retire, it would be taking the easy way out. I still have many young people to help in this business and still a lot more things to do,” he said.
On the issue of Bunji and Fay Ann’s decision to stay out of this year’s Soca Monarch competition, Montano expressed regret, admitting that the duo would have been two of his main competitors. “I don’t really know enough to comment but I must say that they will surely be missed. They are great competitors, great writers and great singers,” he said. Speaking to the critics who claim that he has nothing to prove and as such he should not enter the competition, Montano said his decision to enter Soca Monarch was never about proving anything. Machel said he entered because he wanted to, and that was his choice. Saying that he is ready for the competition and ready to defend his Soca Monarch crown and take the Road March title again, Montano showed no fear for what is to come on show night. Meanwhile, he mentioned that his 30th anniversary in the business would be celebrated in a big way at his annual concert, which is being held on Monday, February 13th. Montano said he will perform for three hours at this year’s Machel Monday.
On another note, questions as to whether the Taipan as he is referred to, is married or ever was, were cleared up on Sunday night when Machel told ETCETERABUZZ.COM that he is not married as previously stated at Saute´ Trinbago in August 2011. He said he came really close to tying the knot but came to the realization that some things just aren’t meant to be. For now, Montano who is said to be working on a very special album this season, says he is enjoying life and is looking forward to reclaiming his carnival crowns in C2K12.
