Taking the Caribbean 2 the World – C2W
January 26, 2012
Recently, Barbados played host to current and future song writers
from throughout the Caribbean and international industry players in an
intense workshop at the Bouganvillea Beach Resort. Caribbean To the
World, or simply C2W, is a music publishing company who sought out names
like Ivan Berry of Beat Factory Music in Toronto and Max Gousse of
DefJam, to take part in the 2 day workshop.
C2W seeks to bring
together the industry’s biggest writing names with aspiring writing and
music talents of the Caribbean. The regional participants were
hand-chosen based on natural talent and passion for the craft, and
together with counterparts from the U.S. and Canada have been hammering
out songs that may end up on the albums of the biggest names in music
like Rihanna, Beyonce and Justin Beiber.

Worthy
of note was the eclectic mix of ages, races, gender and culture, which
the more experienced writers said was an essential component in getting
the right energy and sound for the contemporary artist of today. When
asked why the Caribbean has been included in this elite mix of people,
these writers made specific reference to Rihanna’s success as a source
of inspiration, as the focus has shifted to the Caribbean as a hotspot
for finding the “next big thing”.
C2W does not end at the music
stage, as it is a publicly listed company on the Jamaica stock exchange.
According to the Jamaica Gleaner, the music publishing start up will
seek to raise US$140 million by offering about a quarter of the company
on the Jamaica Junior stock exchange. The company will list share prices
at approximately US$1.20 per share. Thirty year veteran Ivan Berry will
act as chairman of the board.
